Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga blends 19th-century heritage with distinctive Orthodox design. The Main House, dating to the 1890s, was fully restored in the late 1990s, preserving its historic craftsmanship. A highlight is the 1960 chapel, a faithful replica of the 1812 Fort Ross Chapel, recalling California’s Russian colonial past with its shingled walls, cupola, and cross-topped spire. Inside, the chapel’s walls and ceiling are richly adorned with traditional Orthodox iconography, including a vivid mural of the Holy Assumption. Landscaped grounds feature a koi pond, shaded veranda, and walkways. Other structures on site include a “storybook cottage” style house with a distinctive “A-frame” entryway.
