A Legacy Built One Coat at a Time: The Story of NAPCO Painting Contractors
For nearly three decades, NAPCO Painting Contractors has been putting the finishing touches on Napa Valley — literally. Since 1997, the company has grown from a partnership between two local painters into one of the region’s most trusted names in residential, commercial, and fine-finish painting.
How It Started
NAPCO’s roots trace back to Jon La Field of La Field Painting and Bob Zimmerman of Magic Brush Painting, two Napa Valley painting contractors who joined forces to build a company capable of serving both homeowners and businesses across the valley. What started as a combination of two small operations grew into a full-service painting company built on craftsmanship and old-school customer service.
In 2005, Joe Winograde — who had already run his own successful painting business in Napa Valley for 12 years — joined NAPCO, bringing with him deep relationships across the valley’s wineries, estates, and general contractors. When Bob Zimmerman passed away in 2007, Joe stepped forward to carry the business into its next chapter, growing NAPCO’s reputation for high-end estate and winery work over the years that followed.
A New Chapter
In 2025 , Garrett Childress and Sean Hickey acquired NAPCO from Joe Winograde, taking on the responsibility of carrying forward a business built on nearly three decades of trust, craftsmanship, and relationships. Joe remains with the company today as Sales Manager, keeping the client relationships and institutional knowledge he built over two decades right at the center of NAPCO’s day-to-day work. For Garrett, the acquisition wasn’t just a business deal — it was a continuation of a family trade. The family has been in the painting business since the 1970s in Oregon and is still operating today as a third-generation company. That hands-on, generational understanding of the craft — what quality looks like, what it takes to run crews, what it means to stand behind your work — is what Garrett and Sean brought with them into NAPCO. Rather than reinvent the company, they’ve focused on professionalizing NAPCO’s systems and operations while protecting the culture and quality that made it a Napa Valley institution in the first place
What Hasn’t Changed
Through every chapter — new ownership, new capabilities, new clients — NAPCO’s core hasn’t moved: top-quality work, delivered fast, backed by the kind of customer service that’s become rare. The company remains a licensed C-33 painting contractor and a proud member of the Napa Chamber of Commerce and the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, serving everything from family homes to some of the valley’s most recognizable wineries and estates.
Looking Ahead
Today, NAPCO carries forward the legacy Jon, Bob, and Joe built — now guided by an ownership team with its own multi-generational roots in the trade. It’s a company that has weathered nearly 30 years of change in the Napa Valley while staying true to the values that built it: quality craftsmanship, dependability, and treating every client’s home or property like it’s the most important job on the schedule.
