Description

A Napa Coloring Book

  • Introduction for Educators
  • 3rd Grade Lesson Plan – “What Is A Landmark?”
  • ‘A Napa Coloring Book’ Won the State Preservation Award (October, 2015)

Napa County Landmarks (NCL) is proud to announce the continuation of A Napa Coloring Book. This professionally-illustrated coloring and activity book promotes Napa’s history and cultural heritage and represents our first bi-lingual publication aimed at youth, Spanish speakers and families. Thanks to the generous support of the Napa Valley Community Foundation, as well as local businesses and the Bank of Marin, NCL annually distributes copies to all Napa County 3rd graders in May, for National Historic Preservation Month.

Conceived of and created by Marie Dolcini, a freelance writer with a B.A. in History and Napa County Landmarks board member, and illustrated by Mary Ann Henderson, an award-winning Bay Area artist, the 36-page book spans pre-history to the present day in a compelling introductory format that’s appealing to all ages. We sponsor this project to help raise awareness of Napa County’s rich history, inspire kids to dig further and increase their appreciation of this place we call home.

We also created a sample lesson plan based on the question: “What Is a Landmark” to supplement and help provide local context for educators teaching California history curriculum. In October, 2015, the State Office of Historic Preservation selected A Napa Coloring Book for a Governor’s Historic Preservation Award, one of eleven projects named state-wide as demonstrating significant achievement in preserving California’s heritage.

Copies are available for sale at our downtown Napa office. Funds raised will be used to print subsequent editions. If you have comments or suggestions regarding this project, please contact Marie Dolcini at marie.dolcini@gmail.com.

National Alliance of Preservation Commissions

National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC)   Mission Helps communities build strong local preservation programs and leaders through education, training, and advocacy.   The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) was founded in 1983 in response to amendments to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. These amendments provided financial assistance to local governments that met requirements of the Certified Local Government program, including the establishment of a local preservation ordinance and commission. NAPC was formed to provide a forum for commissions to discuss mutual problems and to serve as a national voice representing the particular needs of commissions. NAPC provides technical support and manages an information network … [Read More...]
