The First Presbyterian Church, a California State Historical Landmark, is a beautiful and historic church located in the heart of downtown Napa. This church has been a cornerstone of the community for over 150 years, and continues to serve as a place of worship, fellowship, and community outreach.
The church building itself is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, with soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate woodwork. It was built in 1874 and has been lovingly restored over the years to preserve its original beauty.
The congregation at First Presbyterian Church is welcoming and diverse, with members from all walks of life. They offer a variety of programs and services, including Sunday worship services, Bible studies, youth groups, and community outreach programs.
On August 24, 2014, at 3:20 AM, a 6.0 earthquake rattled through Napa, California. The First Presbyterian Church, while remaining structurally sound, sustained considerable damage as a result of the earthquake.
The current structure was completed in 1874. It is a testament to those who built the Sanctuary that the damage from the quake was able to be repaired. Contracts for repair included seismic retrofitting, stain glass window repair, as well asrenovated wall, flooring, and new pew cushions. There were upgrades to the fire and security system and air conditioning were installed for the first time. The total cost of the restoration was $2 million with the congregation raising $1.5 million. The additional $500,000 came from the community. And while facilities have changed over the years, one thing remains the same … their commitment to Christ, to one another, and to the betterment of the Napa community.
